Democrats are expected to vote on a 30-day extension of the Protect America Act early this week. The President has promised to veto the extension, calling on Congress to pass a permanent fix to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).

The Immigration Subcommittee recently held a hearing on the present backlog of naturalization applications. In addition to its focus on reducing the backlog, the hearing cautioned Congress to not repeat the mistakes of the past.

Last week, the Department of Homeland Security released the final Real ID regulations for the new state-issued driver’s license and identification cards. Congress passed the Real ID Act in 2005 to address national security and immigration concerns. The DHS regulations are a long-awaited step towards ensuring the integrity of the state identification system.
